Example Lesson Plan

Grade 1 E.T. Classes (2 & 3) Tuesday, September 9th, 2008


Topic: School Life (Unit 2 Lesson 4)

Objective:
Have a grasp of phonics relevant to vocabulary words in the lesson and understand “Where” vs. “What” questions

Important Points:

  • Recognizing a long word by the first few letters
  • Recognizing a short word (e.g. “it”, “are”, etc.) by how it looks
  • Using & responding to “where”, “what”, “who”, & “how”
  • Recognizing the written difference between “where” & “what”
  • Associating location words (“on”, “beside”, & “under”) with physical space
  • Following directions (“Go” vs. “Come”)
Schedule:
1)Warm up
1.teacher: Good morning/afternoon class class: Good morning/afternoon Sable
2.Show them various easy words grouped by the first letter. First write the letter on the board and ask the students to call it out. Then have them repeat the letter's sound. Afterwards, show them the word and sound it out with them. After they have the word, have them repeat a sentence they recognize with the word in it.
A: “a”, “am”, “are”
B: “boy”
G: “go”, “girl”
H: “here”, “how”
I: “I”, “in”, “is”, “it”
N: “no”
O: “on”, “old”, “out”
S: “sit”
T: “tall”
Th: “this”, “the”, “there”
Y: “you”, “yes”
2)Review old material
1.“Swing Low” Playground song
  • Put the vocabulary words up on the board and write out the rest of the song
  • Write “S” on the board and ask the students what is it
  • Write “Swi”, “Se”, “Sa”, & “Sli” on the board and have the students repeat the sounds
  • Point to these sounds on the words, and have them repeat “Swing”, “Seesaw”, & “Slide”
  • Sing the song until the students have it
  • Replace the vocabulary words with the correlating pictures and then ask the students to sing again
2.Review questions learned so far.
  • Put the question words learned so far on the board (“Who”, “How”, & “What”)
  • Have them repeat the different question words
  • Write out the question & appropriate answer next to the words
  • “Who are you?” & “I am ______.”
  • “How old are you?” & “I am______.”
  • “What is this?” & “It is a _______.”
  • “Where are you?” & “I am _______________.”
3)New material
1.Teach them “Where are you?” Song
  • Put “Where are you?” on the board and have them repeat it while doing gestures to illustrate the meaning
  • Repeat the song a few times over
  • Put the bunny “on”, “under”, & “beside” a chair so at the end of the song the children yell out “On/under/beside the chair!”
2. Work on listening skills
  • Pass out the various words and have them stand up when the word is called out. Say mainly sentences that they are used to so that they can get used to using the words correctly. Start with saying “Where are you?” & “I am on/under/beside the swing”
4)Review new material taught
1.Test the kids by holding up the words learned in class today & having them call them out
